For artists blessed with creative talent, the Bihar countryside represents a kind of primal experience that, generation after generation, has profoundly shaped the visual thinking of those born here. In Berettyóújfalu, sculptor Imre Kurucz made a specialty of portraying the great figures of Hungarian history and his native homeland — several of his public works still adorn our town. Painter Tibor  Cs. Erdős, also a Berettyóújfalu native, found his career flourishing on the Romanian side of the border in the aftermath of the Treaty of Trianon. Sándor Kürthy, after completing his student years here, moved to Budapest and won ever‑growing renown for his non‑figurative graphics. In painting, too, Bihar has produced standout talents such as Magda Körtvélyessy (born in Báránd), Borbála Fekete (from Szentpéterszeg), Gyula Madarász (born in Zsáka) and Vince Nagy, whose roots lie in Gáborján. Though many of these artists eventually left their Sárrét homeland, their work uniformly preserves Bihar’s distinctive character—landscapes rendered in any medium that reflect the spirit of its people.
