The nationwide industrialisation that began in the second half of the 1960s brought a major change in the life of Berettyóújfalu as well. In consequence of the investments that began at the end of the decade, the municipality experienced the biggest and fastest industrial growth in its history in the following years. Among the largest investments was the opening of the first section of the Elzett factory, which was expanded with additional sections in the following years. Major expansions were made to the Füszért, the Clothing factory and the Skimmed milk powder factory, and the construction of a grain storage facility (suitable to store loads of 1000 railway wagons) at the Mill. The Bakery) and the depot of the Borsodi brewery) in Berettyóújfalu started operations. The Clothing Retail Company built a 400m² store, and the Áfész local department store underwent a major expansion. KPM’s road maintenance, Waterworks and Sewerage and Transtisza Electric Power Works sites were built, as well as a new gasoline station was constructed. Infrastructure investments have also attracted significant labour to the municipality, including the construction of a sewage network, the extension of the water and electricity networks, a kindergarten (for 100 children), the construction of the Morotva housing estate and the construction of several roads and pavements. Thanks to the industrial modernization, the population of the settlement grew by leaps and bounds, exceeding the national average: the population of Berettyóújfalu increased from 14,000 in 1971 to 16,500 in 1980. The majority of the workers – almost 5,000 people – were already employed in industry and the service sector, which was based on it to a considerable extent. That decade and a half of industrialisation went down in the history of our town as a very prosperous and successful chapter in the story of the second half of the 20th century. This period of some fifteen years of dynamic economic and infrastructural innovation was a decisive factor in Berettyóújfalu’s rise to the status of a town.
