Marriage was a very important event in the life of the individual, and the wedding day was celebrated with the community. The wedding customs followed a sequence determined by tradition. 

When a decision was made to join two young people’s lives together, first the proposal was made, then the affirmative answer, followed by the engagement, which at the beginning of the century was called betrothal, then engagement. Then the preparations for the wedding began: on the Sunday afternoon before the wedding, the shell-shaped noodles for the soup were prepared at the bride’s house.

The “vőfély” was the host or coach of the wedding, responsible for inviting the guests a week before the ceremony. He conducted every moment of the wedding, from the asking of the bride to the bride’s dance, and he introduced the wedding feast with a series of rhymes.

 Around one or two hours after midnight, the bride’s hair was done up in a bun. The bride was redressed next door.  Her hair was wrapped in a bun and tied up with a scarf. In Bihar the colour of the gown the bride was dressed in following the wrapping her hair was black until the late 1950s.
